This recipe was very good and I liked that it is prepped the night before and just popped in the oven in the morning. I made it as directed with great success. This could be made with any kind of jam if you don't care for marmalade or have it on hand. Will make it again!

Great to get it ready the previous night. Used only 2 cups milk, 1/4 cup sugar and lots of cinnamon and nutmeg. The bottom got soggy but it worked as I turned the slices in the morning 1/2 hour before I baked it. I used Berry preserves from Ikea and since we do not like it too sweet, it worked great.

I couldn't find sourdough French bread so I used a Farmhouse style Sourdough. It was a little too moist but tasted fabulous. I did make the warm syrup with a bit of OJ added. I used pecans instead of walnuts. It was super easy and we really enjoyed it.

I make this every year for Christmas. I use challah bread from a local bakery; about 1 large loaf. I add 1/2 teaspoon of salt to the egg mixture. And I never use an entire 12 oz. of marmalade! 8 oz. is more like it. I add the nuts during the last 15 minutes because otherwise the nuts come close to burning. I don't know if this would be as good using bland french bread...I think the sweet challah is what makes this awesome.

I have made this twice. Following others suggestions, I used low sugar raspberry jam as I have found similar recipes to be too sweet for my family's taste. I also cut the milk to 2 1/2 cups as it was a bit soggy the first time. The second time I made it with low sugar apricot jam as that was on hand and it was equally good.

I make this often for company brunch, but tone down the sweetness. Use low sugar (not fake sugar) marmalade or jam, no sugar in the egg mixture, add cinnamon and some fresh ground pepper. For a more savory meal add layers of Prosciutto and Gruyere over the marmalade.

After reading a few of the reviews, I made this but made some changes. I didn't really change the ingredients, just the way it's assembled and made. I had to use italian bread since I couldn't find a loaf of french bread. After slicing the bread I broke the slices into large chunks and put them in a bowl. I drizzled the bread with olive oil (instead of butter) and added orange marmalade. Mix well making sure bread is well coated. (I did this in batches of two until all bread had been mixed) Sprinkle bread with nutmeg and mix again. In seperate bowl mix milk, eggs, sugar and vanilla as stated. I used less sugar. Spray dish, spread bread evenly in dish, sprinkle with craisins, I also added some ground flaxseed. Pour milk/egg mixture over bread. Cover and refrig 8 hrs. Bake covered for 25 then uncover for remaining 20 mins. It is DELICIOUS!!!

I added a bit of cream cheese to the filling, just because I had some. Before baking I turned the little sandwiches over in the pan. I was afraid there would be too much custard, but it all cooked up nice and fluffy. The ladies all loved it!

I agree with the post that said that recipe was very bland. It was very easy to make but really was not very tasty. I think I will stick to the conventional french toast recipes.

This recipe was bland and too gooey. I added extra spice, let it sit overnight, and used apricot preserves instead because people didn't like orange. It was just so so. The top was the best part because it was crunchy. To improve I would make sure the bread is pretty stale, layer some nuts under the top layer, and add more spices.

This is a great recipe. I made it for a brunch with friends and they all raved about it. The only change I would make is instead of pouring the egg mixture over the bread ( I found that the top layer didn't soak up the egg mixture) I would dunk each piece of bread in the egg mixture before putting it in the pan and pour the extra on top.

Liked the idea, but it wasn't particularly french toasty. It tasted good, but more like a bread pudding with the top part being very crusty and nothing custardy about it. I will stick with the soak slices overnight and grill/bake French Toast overnight recipes next time.

This casserole is so very good and you don't even need to serve it with syrup. It's also easy for those "new to the kitchen".

use Portuguese fresh rolls and Ikea's orange and elderberry marmalade. Used soy milk. Awesome, definite keeper!

I love this recipe. It is what I make every year on Christmas morning. It is so convenient to be able to make it Christmas Eve and put it in the oven Christmas morning while we open presents. My husband's not a big fan of marmalade, so I usually use strawberry jam instead, but it is still delicious!

I made this for a brunch where a diverse group of people attended. It was devoured in minutes! The only change I made to the recipe was to include apricot jam with the marmalade to cut the bitterness. Also, I only used 1/2 cup of the combined jams to reduce the sweetness. The result was delicious. Although it required a bit more baking time, It was puffy and golden out of the oven. I wouldn't hesitate to prepare this again.

I have been making this recipe for several years and its definitely a family favorite! When I make the egg/milk mixture I usually only use 2 c of milk. I always flip the 'french toast sandwiches' as they're absorbing the liquid. For more firm french toast I've flipped them halfway through cooking but usually I just cook for a few extra minutes. I have tried other jams and one of my favorite combinations is cherry jam with chopped almonds on top. I also sometimes spread a thin layer of ff cream cheese or neufchatel on the other slice of bread -yum!

We've made this twice & the whole family loves it. This is a sure winner at our house and is so easy to make. I followed recipe exact the first time and it was too sweet. Second time we switched to strawberry preserves and hardly any sugar and we LOVED it. (Any preserves would work great, it's personal preference) Bake uncovered to brown and crisp the edges of the bread, and make sure to spoon some of the egg mixture over the top layer.

I'm surprised that several people had problems! I used cinnamon instead of nutmeg, pecans instead of walnuts, and Smuckers Low Sugar marmalade. It was delicious! Note that the recipe does NOT say to bake it covered. I'll make this again because I love the make-ahead aspect. Since it was plenty sweet, I might use a little less sugar next time because I like the idea of an orange flavored syrup.

The process to make this casserole was easy. It looks exactly as pictured but it needs kicked up in the taste sector. In addition we served turkey sausage and fruit salad and a potato dish. I did not add all the sugar to the bread, I felt there should have been a savory flavor instead of sweet added.

I wasn't crazy about it (and I don't think the Christmas morning crowd was either). However, I will say that it was extremely easy, and it might have been better with something other than marmalade. I will try this again with low-sugar strawberry or cherry jam simply because it was so easy, and goes well with a make-ahead breakfast casserole buffet (I made this, southwestern breakfast casserole and hash brown casserole to feed 15 on Christmas morning, and the whole meal was very easy).

I made this today & I was not crazy about it. In the recipe's defense, I am doing WW so I used Splenda instead of sugar, FF milk, ICBINB instead of regular butter & sugar-free marmalade. I baked it at the recommended temp and time and it was too soggy and the top layer didn't get much mixture on it even though I tried to push it down. It just didn't work for me.

This is so easy and so good! 15 minutes to put together. I make it lot for company, family and crowds. We like to use Mango jam instead of the marmalade. Sourdough bread is essential for this dish. Fresh fruit and bacon go well with this.

Great recipe although I make it without the marmalade. That way everyone can add their own level of sweetness with pancake syrup. I'm making it this year for Thanksgiving morning!

I just made this for Easter brunch for 25 people. After reading several reviews, I opted to use sugar-free marmalade and made sure I used 2 day old bread and really soaked up the egg mixture. However, the french toast was still soggy and had no taste. I was SO bummed that I didn't test out this recipe before such a big event! I would not recommend this recipe.

I love this recipe! We are nut free so lost the nuts and like it with homemade low-sugar strawberry jam instead of marmalade. I add extra cinnamon & nutmeg. Have also made it with regular whole wheat bread for an any day breakfast when I don't have anything else on hand. Easy to make the night before for busy moms & never any leftovers with my houseful of boys!
